Fellowship positions for Green Education and Science for Central Asia

Background:

Established in 1999, Deutsch-Kasachische Universität (DKU) is a non-profit private higher education institution in Almaty that offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees (http://dku.kz/de/). The UNESCO Chair on Integrated Water Resources Management and Natural Resources Research Institute under DKU is a community implementing activities aligned with directions of education, capacity building and science in the spheres of water management, climate change, and energy efficiency and aimed at the education and capacity building of youth, practitioners and academia. Along with these three central themes (Education, Capacity-Building, and Science), the activities of the Institute and Chair are directed at developing scientific and scholarly research, delivering strong academic programs in the field of IWRM, natural resources management in Central Asian countries, and enhancement of scientific relations between the Institute and international, regional scientific and expert organizations.

 

Project description:

We seek a highly qualified and motivated individuals with an attitude towards collaboration and multi-and interdisciplinary research to work as a Doctoral or Postdoctoral Researchers in our team. The proposed positions will be embedded within the Green Central Asia Project (https://green-central-asia.net/), initiated by the German Government. The project focuses on enabling Central Asian countries and Afghanistan to gain better access to the:

  • (Felowship position Water Science and Climate Change) information on the impact of climate change and take preventive measures. The project will foster scientific collaboration, conduct dialogues and capacity building workshops to increase decisionmakers’ abilities to adequately address climate-change-related security risks at the national and regional levels and promote a high-level political dialogue on the nexus between climate change and security.
  • (Felowship position Water Governance and Climate Policy) information about the role  that governance and policy play in water resources management. Possible research themes include e.g. waterrelated planning, innovations and policy processes, key management and policy legal frameworks (e.g. IWRM, water-energy-food security nexus, water security, SDGs), science-policy-stakeholder interface as well as transboundary water cooperation.

The proposed position will be shared between the DKU and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The successful applicants will be hosted by the DKU and will spend up to two months per year at PIK. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts, and sustainable development. It is one of the world's leading research institutions in its field and offers natural and social scientists from around the world an inspiring environment for excellent interdisciplinary research. 

Position description:

The fully-funded positions are funded for 1 year with a possibility of extension and start in July 2020. The research fellowship will provide scholarships and travel opportunities to interact with the scientific mentor, provided by DKU and PIK. The research fellows shall also attend scientific conferences and meetings and provide support in the organization of the project's activities of the Institute and provide support in the organization of capacity building workshops with the frames of the Green Central Asia Project. Minor moderate teaching support at the UNESCO Chair in Water Resources Management is also foreseen.

Selection criteria:

The selection of the doctoral/postdoctoral fellows will be based on their academic record and the research proposals on the project to be conducted at DKU/PIK.

Qualifications:

  • An earned Ph.D. or Master of Science degree in a relevant field (i.e. natural sciences, economics…) for the fellowship position - Water Science and Climate Change;
  • An earned Ph.D. or Master of Science/Art degree in a relevant field (i.e. environmental policy, political science…) for the fellowship position - Water Governance and Climate Policy;
  • It is expected that the candidate’s Ph.D./Master degree was granted not more than 5 years before the application deadline;
  • Candidate has to be able to develop and manage scientific research, to work effectively both independently and in team;
  • Fluency in both written and oral English and Russian languages is required;
  • Readiness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops, etc.) and take part in design and realization of capacity building training and webinars.

 

The applicants for the Water Science and Climate Change Felowship position shall, additionally to the  required qualification, have:

  • Some programming experience (e.g. Python, R, bash.. ) and GIS for applicants with natural science background.
